The Haven’s Legacy:
"The Untold Story"
In 2000, Don Wyse, a retired church member, identified a need in the Rutland community for women and their children to have a space where they could gather in a safe and healthy environment. He envisioned a place where they could enjoy morning coffee, engage in a short daily devotional, have a nutritious lunch, and make new friends—all at no charge.
The Rutland Ladies Haven opened its doors in 2001 at Houseman Hall with 6-8 women in attendance and a handful of dedicated volunteers providing meals. It didn’t take long for The Haven to gain popularity. Women engaged in handicrafts, participated in theme days, and looked forward to an annual fashion show and holiday celebration luncheons.
Grateful for the support they received, the women were eager to give back to those less fortunate in the community and beyond. They generously donated items and filled Christmas shoeboxes. They collected and crafted items for Christmas bags, extending their kindness to the homeless in Kelowna, and contributed to many other mission projects
Haven Now:
A Modern Glimpse
The Haven currently welcomes an average of 35 women each week. A group from The Pathways Abilities Society has become an integral part of our ministry. Over the years, our focus has evolved. While we continue to invite women to socialize and connect with friends, we also encourage participation in various mission projects. Once completed, these projects are sent to the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Warehouse in Victoria, B.C., for distribution to those in need worldwide.
Special luncheons are organized for holiday celebrations, enhancing the sense of community and belonging. All events at The Haven, including these festive gatherings, are offered at no charge to attendees.
